Starting a new instrument as an upper-classman may not be recommended, but senior David Hurley and juniorBenton Huang both took on the challenge anyway. Beginning in orchestrawasnt too hard for Hurley and Huang.Ive been around music enough to know howmusic works, Hurley said. Before they started playing in orchestra, Hurleyand Huang both played instruments. Hurleyplayed bass clarinet and Huang played tromboneand piano.Huang decided to learn how to play the cellobecause it was a new instrument.Young Hoon Koh convinced me to join. Hethought it would be fun, Huang said.Hurley wanted to learn how to play the bassjust for fun. He likes music and string instruments, so orchestra seemed like a good idea.I want to be a band director. It helps to knowthe different types of instruments, and the bassis just fun, Hurley said.As easily as reading music is to Hurley andHuang, playing a different type of instrument is alittle harder to get used to.At first Huang had no problem learning his newinstrument. Reading music comes easy to him,but the more advanced music made it harder forhim to learn.Hurley has the same problem. Its different to play the bass, its not what Imused to so it makes it a little hard, Hurley said. However, that didnt affect Hurley too much. Hesaid the bass is the easiest instrument to play. Its just the bass line Im playing. The onlything thats hard about the music is that its classical, which I think is harder to play, Hurley said.As different as learning a new instrument isHuang thinks that is fun. He likes the new styleand being in a big orchestra, just like the HoosierYouth Philharmonic. The Hoosier Youth Philharmonic is the Northand South orchestras combine together. Its really embarrassing to play with Souththough. They think I suck as I sit in the backrow, Huang said.ByShWhiteThree members of orchestra dance during the Orchestras holiday concert. Freshman Darianne Robertson (far right) volunteered to be one of Santas helpers because of her outgoing nature. The crowd enjoyed our act a lot, especially the littlekids, Robertson said.Photo by Zoe Withered146 orchestra |
