The studentsj I who participate in productions are~f I expected to give their best effort at\J %J every single try-out, practice andperformance, but the power behind the performers comes from the director. In this case thedirector is theatre teacher Jennifer Hartz.Hartz has taken over the position as theatreproductions manager and theatre arts teacherfor Francesca Sobrer. Sobrer had talked oftaking a sabbatical for the last few years andfinally decided that she would take some time offduring the 2009-2010 school year. Sobrer didntcompletely abandon the theatre department, however. Instead, she sought out a reliable anddedicated replacement during her time away.Enter Hartz. She stands not extremely tall, with a soft spoken voice and delicate features. She smiles as theatre students come into herclassroom, the Black Box. Hartz, who is also aPoetry teacher, found her way to North via theNorth website where she put in an application forthe theatre teacher position and was then calledin the next day for an interview. Part of why Hartzwas hired was because of her background in thetheatre arts.I majored in English Education and TheatreArts at Bethel College. I have experience inacting, costume/make up design and directing,Hartz said. The theatre department has always been aprestigious part of North, and Hartz plans onkeeping it that way. Sobrer requested that Hartzkeep the childrens play tour and the livingstatues due to the fact that the kids in the classreally enjoy taking part and preparing thoseprojects.Hartz is now helping to further her studentstime on stage, she has enjoyed her own time onthe stage as well. The Sting was a fun one. It was all aboutgangsters, Hartz said.Hartz brought some fun to the North theatreproductions group with her direction of Rumors.I really enjoy helping kids find their right fit in aproduction. Its like a family and we all are therefor each other, said Hartz.13y Yleena Armitagetheatre
