Once a year, exceptional artstudents are nominated by anart teacher for induction into theNational Art Honor Society. Thoseselected participate in an induction ceremony, welcoming them into the group.Assistant Principal Marcus Debro told theinductees to not think of the initiation as a formality. Instead, he reminded them that such recognition confirms their status as some of the bestwithin the art community.I have not encountered a group of studentsthat were more deserving, he said.However, the selection process marks justthe beginning of the commitment to the honorsociety. Senior Vice President Alex Mitchell saidthe groups goal is to provide a climate whereaspiring artists to flourish.[One of] the purposes of the National Art Honor Society [is] to encourage the creative abilitiesand talents of the individual student, he said.The students also put in plenty of outside-of-school work. Everyone must complete 30 hoursof art-related service.These hours may include assisting art classesduring the school day, but some volunteeredafter 2:30 p.m. by helping with things such asEvening of the Arts and the Jiffy Treet mural.Students even sold boxes of chocolates anditems from a catalog to meet the requirement.While 30 hours nearly equals the time spent ata full-time job, senior member Michael Boehnleindoesnt see the time as work.It doesnt even matter what the event is, itsalways a great, fun time for everyone, he said.I personally enjoy spending time with other passionate high school artists.The groups president, senior Rebecca Roberts, said she appreciates the opportunity torepay those who have helped her and her peers.Im just glad I have the chance to give something back, at least a little; for everything [the artteachers] have done for me and the rest of theart students at North.In fact, Roberts considers it a privilege to meetthe challenge of the organizations sponsors andparticipate in the community service activities.The art department at North is phenomenal,she said.
