Bouncing BackStory by Spencer Ferenczy and Kelsey ButcherThe girls basketball team had to deal withjunior Audrey Hamilton and senior Kaity Strattentearing their ACLs, a ligament in the knee. This kept them from playing most of theseason. Hamilton tore her ACL whiledribbling and then cut to the basket, this moveended her season at North. Stratten wasdribbling along the baseline in practice andfell down not realizing at first that she had tornher ACL. In one move both girls year to standout was over. Some players said it was hard for them to dealwith the disappointment and the hardships ofphysical therapy. However they were still gladto be on the team and were happy for how wellthe team did.(It) was disappointing, but still fun to bearound the girls and see them succeed as wellas they did, Hamilton said. The girls had to go through extensive physicaltherapy and deal with the mental problems thatcome with tearing a ligament.Rehab was very difficult because with rehabI had to work hard to get all my strength back inmy leg, because after surgery I lost all themuscle, Stratten said.Unlike Hamilton, Stratten did get to play atleast once after the injury. During the last gameon senior night Jan. 31, Stratten got to go in for afew seconds. She was able to play, just for a littlebit during her last season for North. Not only did she get to go in and play duringthis game, but she also scored. It was nerve-racking because I didnt want tomess up my leg. It was very exciting and meanta lot to me. It was nice of the other team to let meshoot and for my team to pass me the ball andfor coach to put me in, Stratten said.Even though the girls basketball team didnthave Hamilton or Stratten, it went on to winsectionals and won the first game at regional.I didnt think we would be able to stick togetherwithout Kaity. But as the season went on, we knew wecould pull together as a team.-Ashley Ross, sophomoreSenior Lori Whitaker tries not tofoul South senior Maggie Storkduring the cougars sectional victory. As the lone senior, Whitakerfought her way to a sectional title.74 Girls Basketball |
