Wemust lookat all sidesof the95story.-Ben Lawson, seniorSeniors Kavita Patel and Amy Williamsapproached the Assembly Hall microphonetogether Saturday afternoon, June 10. The twowere part of a select group of graduates to givea speech to the class of 2006 and its friendsand family.Other graduation speakers were seniors ChrisMorrison, Andy Dema, and Ben Lawson.To be selected as a graduation speaker, theseniors had to sign up and try out. Beforeschool got out each student had to give theirspeech in front of Mr. Bill Hays, Mrs. VickieWaltz, Mrs. Pat Wilson, and Mrs. Joanne Frye.I knew all the teachers really well, but it hadto be strickly business, Patel said.Williams was out of town and was not able totry out. She had senior Holly Heidt read herlines with Patel for her.About two days after the tryout the five seniorswere notified by a slip of paper during class.All four of us were in the same governmentclass when we found out, Patel said. We thoughtthere would be more in other classes, but it wasjust us.Patel and Williams speech was based on aRalph Waldo Emerson quote. They spoke aboutwhat lies within the class of 2006, the past, andthe future.I wasnt nervous at all, Patel said. It wasexciting, fun, and the audience reacted well withthe jokes.Lawson on the other hand said he wasincredibly nervous.Id never spoken in front of that many people,Lawson said. It want fun but terrifying.Morrison also thought the crowd was very large.He said preparing for the speech didnt help atall. Once he got up there he said his responsewas Oh, wow...alot of people. He just had toread what he wrote.At the end I realized it was over, Morrisonsaid. It was a process of being scared andexcited.Morrisons speech was about how no matterwhat, everyone will have faith in something afterhigh school.After high school it is up to us to take the extrastep, Morrison said.Story by Ruby KohlerSenior Sendoff20 Graduation
