From Thursday, April 24th through the 30th numbers like Magic to Doand Corner of the Sky attracted hundreds of people here at North andoutside of North to this years musical production, Pippin.Pippins story goes something like this: Pippin, son of KingCharlemagne of the Holy Roman Empire, believes that a happy life canonly be obtained through the growth of power and fame. Pippinmeanders through opportunity, stumbles into a confused depression, and is finally found by Catherine, a widow, who has, as weird as itsounds, a foot fetish. They gradually, fall in love, and in the end, Pippinis given the choice of either gaining immediate fame or staying withCatherine and her son, in the simplicity of family love.Nick Romy proved to be just right for the role of Pippin. From themurder of this father to his humorous intimacy scene (in bed) withCatherine, Nick exhibited a spectrum of feelings. And how could anyone hold in a laugh while Fastrada, playedby Becca Russo, or Lewis, portrayed byAndi Dema, performed their antics. Fastradasjoke regardinghousewives seemed to be pretty popular among the women in the audience, but its pre-womens rights erasatire didnt reach as far as the student crowd. Nonetheless, it got some laughs up until the third or fourth timeRusso uttered it.The costumes were marvelously done. Beyond the aesthetic quality, each characters dress came intogood harmony with his or her personality: an eclectic collection of light hippie flair [Pippin], upscale feminineclassiness [Fastrada], and Mardi gras flamboyance [Lewis]. The chorus and Players gypsy dresses flowedwith the music while Leading Player Ryan Smiths glimmering ruby red hat and matching sneakers added anice touch to his sleek footwork. The dance was choreographed byDiane Buzzell. Everything seemed to becoordinated well with the music and song.In the complexity of each charactersdance movements one could really seehow much time must have gone intopractice. I thought the story was interesting.Pippins story made me see that saying iseasy, but doing is hard, said junior MieTsutsumi, who reflected on how Pippinwas determined to make life better for thepeople of the empire, but discoveredwhat compromises must be made to runan empire.Pippin was directed by FrancescaSobrer while music direction was doneby Janis Stockhouse and Louis Wohlofka. The costumes were designed by Kristina Makowski.144m |
