■Fine ArtsTurning Materials Into MasterpiecesWhen we were in elementary school, art was a class wehad once a week. Like the other classes we had once aweek, gym and music, some of us were good at it andsome were not so good. The ones who were good, arenow really showing off their work. Bloomington North offersnine different art classes each with expanding levels, ranging from Computer Graphics to Stained Glass. About900 students participated in the fine arts program this yearat North. Each student had the joys and the struggles ofturning materials into masterpieces, with each piece ofwork having characteristics of the artist and his or her lives. All teachers are active artists committed to excellence andproviding the best program possible, said Dr. DenieseSmith.Teachers andDanka Matic students workedtogether toproduce the annual event Evening of the Arts. Since no art class couldhave a recital or a game to show off their wonderful work, Evening ofthe Arts allows students to show their families all the things they hadbeen working on throughout the year. This gives students something towork toward and it is equivalent to an Art opening. Students arerequired to be there, to show their work, and to explain their work ifneeded, said Smith. Just like bringing your artwork home to put on therefrigerator, all the artwork is displayed in the library for everyone towalk around and see. It is good for the public and for the schoolcommunity, said Smith. The art program at North offers admission to the National ArtHonor Society. Students can earn a Varsity letter for participating in theNAHS. Each year there are usually 30-34 students who are part ofNAHS, said Smith. To beClaudia GulickSarah Cravensa part of NAHS you mustcomplete six semesters ofart classes with a B or above, complete 16 community servicehours and participate in six contests or exhibitions. There are classes for students who are beginners and classesfor those students who have had a great deal of experience with art. Many classes have all levels of students enrolled in them; it is oneof the only programs in the school where you can have freshmenand seniors in the same classroom. Art is all about the creativeprocess, there is no right answer. In any given project there aremultiple ways to attack, approach and complete it. We, theteachers, provide a structure and want a creative response from thestudents, says Smith.140 |
