Description:	Boys Track and FieldThe 2003 boys track and field team had another goodseason, ending with a dual meet record of 6 wins and one loss toColumbus North in a close meet. The boys placed highly in all theinvitational meets they attended. They were awarded 1 st place atboth the Seymour and Brown County/Bedford Invites. They alsocame in 2nd at the Martinsville Invite. The Cougars went on to winboth sectionals and regionals, and had many individual efforts atthe state competition. Some state competitors included juniorJohn Hiestand who took second place in the 800, and junior RyanSmith who finished third in the 300 hurdles. Senior JoeBronnenberg finished fifth in the pole vault competition, and the3200-meter relay team of Mark Connelley, Julius Hanks, MichaelPhillipsen and John Hiestand broke a 21-year-old school recordwith a 7:58.20, earning them 13th place in the state meet.Despite their excellent season, the Cougars only finished5th in Conference Indiana.Smith received the Gold Award for his hard work and contributions to the team. He broke Norths schoolrecord, the sectional record, and the regional record in the 300 meter hurdles. Smith also broke the sectionalrecord in the 110 high hurdles. Hiestand was presented with the Maroon Award for his positive mental attitude.This year, the team was much closer than it has been in previous years.
