MMH^mQtjpwptetflTeam Places 14th at Nationalsby Andrea ClaytonBloomington Norths Science Olympiad team won state and beatBloomington South for the first time on March 24 at Indiana Universitygiving them a spot at nationals. Souths second place finish also advancedthem to nationals.The determined 15 member team beat South with a score of 104-130.The lowest score wins out of 23 events in competition. During the springbreak the team practiced eight hours a day everyday except Sunday toprepare for state. For Nationals the team practiced Tuesdays andThursdays after school and all day Saturdays.A friend of the team, senior Amelia Newcomer said, Theyve workedextremely hard, and are cool people. They really do work hard. They area credit to North, and Patrick ONeil is an especially good captain.Patricks brother, Dan ONeil, coach of the team, was on theBloomington North science olympiad team for four years, and teamcaptain his sophmore through senior years. Now ONeil is an IndianaUniversity physics major.At State the team members all competed in at least one event. RebeccaHome and Muchu Zhou placed first in Amphibians and Reptiles. BrianAdams and Kate Williams placed fourth in the Boomilever competition.Megan Greischar and Katie McGerr placed first in cell biology. Marc Conradand Patrick ONeill placed second in Cow-A-Bungee. Adams and Conradboth did Dynamic Planet, placing first. Mission Possible took a fourth placewith Home, ONeill, and Isaac Laughlin. Adams and Helena Lunts placedfifth in Practical Data Gathering. Adams and Martin Home placed second inReach for the Stars. Conrad and ONeill placed first in Road Scholar.Greischar and Zhou placed second in Rocks and Minerals. Placing first inScience Club were ONeill and Zhou. In third place for scrambler wasLaughlin. ONeill and Kaity Zhang placed first in Using the Web. WaterQuality placed third with Heidt and Zhang. Laughlin and McGerr placed firstin Write It Do It.Team Captain Patrick ONeill said, Its really exciting to go to Nationals,its an honor just to go, but I hope we earn some National honors while werethere.There were 54 high school teams at Nationals on May 19, in ColoradoSprings. |
