Description: Getting in Shape and Feeling GreatGymnasts take one to state and have first male participant.The 1978 girls gymnastic team wasthe strongest in Norths history. With fivereturning senior letter winners — RachelKlassen, Lisa Williams, Carol and KarenKurtenbach, and Krissy Wills — the Cougars had a winning season. Williams wasstrong on vault and was a bar specialist,the Kurtenbach twins worked on barsand were excellent vaulters, Wills participated on the balance beam although aninjury slowed her during the first part ofthe season, and Klassen was the all-around performer, competing in all fourevents, (bars, balance beam, vault, andfloor exercise).Adding to this group was sophomoreKim England participating on the beamand the floor exercise, freshman KarenSchwomeyer in the floor exercise, juniorKathy Ross on the bars, sophomore SaraBrown on the beam and floor exercise,and freshman Karen Hartung also competing on the beam and the floor exercise.The gymnasts placed third in theColumbus sectionals. Klassen finishedsecond in all-around competition. Shetied for first in the floor exercise and tookfourth on the balance beam. SophomoreLucetta Pope won the intermediate floorexercise and sophomore Sarah Coxplaced third.Regional competition only advancedone Cougar to state, Rachel Klassen.Klassen finished fifth as an all-arounder.She tied for third on the balance beamwhich took her to the state contest. Klassen placed eighth in state competition,not doing as well as expected.Senior Bernie Pratt represented Northat the 1978 Indiana State Mens Gymnastic Championships as an all-aroundcontestant and as a side horse specialist.After qualifying at the Columbus sectional, first on side horse and third as all-around, he went on to a first place finishon side horse and tenth in all-around atthe state meet at Warren Central.At Bloomington South, senior Rachel Klassen performs a backhandspring in her floor exercise routine. Klassen got a second for her efforts. Northbeat South 79.15-20.05.Senior Bernie Pratt gets a workout at the I.U. fieldhouse.
