Description: Swimming Suits Us FineGirls take first in HHC, third in sectionals, and send four to state.Coached by Mrs. Jane Reeves thegirls swim team had a tough season thisyear suffering from illnesses and badweather. Meets got cancelled and sectional dates got all out of hand that by theweek before sectionals the girls didnteven have a place to work out. With allaccounted for, the girls had a winning 6-3 season.The season opened against a verygood Terre Haute South team. The girlslost 87-85 and the loss did nothing butdampen their spirits. After a disappointing defeat, the girls came on strong andwent on to win five straight, includingoutstanding victories over HHC competitors Floyd Central, 125-47, and BedfordN.L 105-67.Traveling back to Floyd Central, theCougars competed in the Hoosier HillsChampionships. With all the girls makinga fine showing they came home with thefirst place trophy. Ending the seasonagainst Bloomington South, the girlssplashed in with a 92-80 victory.Placing third in the sectionals, theCougars managed to take four swimmersto the state contest at Ball State University. Sophomore Susie Lawson participated in the 200 individual medley and100 butterfly, and junior Susie McQuigg,senior Diane Trisler, sophomore CarolynZimmerman, and Susie Lawson in the200 medley relay.Closing out the season, the GoldAward, Valuable Swimmer, went to SusieLawson and the Maroon Award, Best Attitude, went to junior Carole Pimperton.Also receiving recognition were seniorsDiane Morris in the backstroke and freestyle, Kathleen ONeal in the butterflyand freestyle, Jill Price in the backstrokeand freestyle, Diane Trisler in the breast-stroke and individual medley, and DebbieWade in the butterfly and freestyle.With only a few feet to go, senior Kathy Strongsplashes to the finish line of the 100-yard butterfly.You mean it.
