Despite thepouring down of rain the Cougars won21-0.It was another rainy evening when theCougars met Floyd Central, but NorthsGrant Gray still found plenty of runningroom. Bomber handed off to Gray, whoslipped through the line and ran 81 yardsfor a touchdown, the Cougars winningagain 25-6 and alos propelling themselves into first place in the conference.Homecoming brought both happinessand disappointment. Happiness went tothe crowning of the 1977 Queen KimButcher, but the disappointment was theCougars loss to Seymour 17-7. Seymours Mark Haskett intercepted aBomber pass and returned it 94 yards tothe North two to set up the games finalscore late in the second quarter. Bombernever meant to pass. He was holding fora 25-yard field goal attempt by seniorClark Brewer. The kick never came off.The snap from center was high. Bombersnared it while coming out of his crouch,moved left, then spun back right andlofted a pass to junior Eric Fairfield. Instepped Haskett, knifing in front of Fairfield for the interception at the four. TheCougars never got back the second halfwith the final score remaining Seymour17-7.North traveled to Jenning County foranother HHC competitor. In the fourthquarter Gray scored an 88-yard run at7:45. On the second play after Grays TD,Blann recovered at the 35. Five playslater, Gladfelter sidled around right endfor a nine-yard TD run. Jennings Countygot off two plays before a Panther fumbled and Blann recovered again, thistime at the Panther 22. Gray needed oneplay to score. In six minutes Northscored four touchdowns, 28 points.North won 45-21.It was the last game of the season andthe Cougars took on Indianapolis-Howeat home. It was a night of individualexhibition. Gladfelter completed 13 of 20passes for 217 yards, Blann returned afirst quarter punt 73 yards for a touchdown and Gray returned a second quarter punt 48 yards for a touchdown. Splitend Jeff Trinkle caught six passes for108 yards. The Cougars had little troublewith the Hornets winning 53-14.North, a second year HHC member,finished with an 8-2 overall record, a 4-2HHC record, won the HHC championship, had coach Nichols named HHCcoach of the year, and had seven playersnamed to the all-conference team; seniors Bob Laughlin and Mark Fairfield,offensive lineman; Jeff Trinkle, received-Bob Cox and Carl Deal, defensive lineman; Danny Blann, defensive back, andjunior Grant Gray, offensive back.The maroon award went this year toBob Cox and the gold to Grant Gray. Graywas also named to the junior all-stateteam. The Cougars set a new record inrushing this season with 2,368 yards.Gray got hold of the record books and didsome changing of his own. He set a newrushing record with 1,169 yardsopposed to the 1,023 yards set in 1974by Rodney Hopkins. He also set a recordof 9.8 yards a carry and set a record forfield goal attempts with three this season. He also set the total points scoredwith 94 for the season, breaking againHopkins 73.
