Description: £££ BOYS BASKETBALLSectionalChampsCoach Tom McKinneys Cougars had a tough act to followthis year after winning the last ever, all-inclusive, Boys StateBasketball Championship in 1997, with a 28-1 record. Havinglost six graduating seniors, and two other players who moved,the 1997-98 Northsiders had some big shoes to fill. They did soadmirably with a record of 20-4, and a championship at theColumbus sectional. The Cougars tournament hopes endedwith a loss to Lawrence Central in the Columbus regional aftera season-ending injury to all-state forward and Syracuse University recruit, Kueth Duany, the week before.The Cougars of 1998 produced a school defensive record,allowing opponents an average of 41.8 points per game (breaking the defensive record average of the 97 state champs). TheCougars were led in scoring and rebounding by 66 Duany whowas followed in scoring by 69 sophomore Jared Jeffries and67 all-state senior, and Indiana State University recruit, DjibrillKante.In addition to the record defensive average, the Cougarseason was highlighted by tournament wins over two of theteams, Martinsville and Bloomington South, who beat the Cougars during the regular season. The other Cougar loss, in lateFebruary, was to eventual state champions Indianapolis Pike bya score of 56-51. It was Kantes first game back after more thana month out with a broken foot. In his 11th year at the Cougarhelm, Coach McKinney has now amassed a record of 179-78 foran outstanding .694 winning percentage.Jared Jeffries goes over the top for anice jumper.
