^More Than Just a Pretty FaceTennis Team Experiences Year of Learning as Track Team Builds For theFuture1977 was a year of learning for thegirls tennis team. Their record was 11 -3,and for such a young inexperiencedgroup of girls it was quite an accomplishment. The teams they played were toughcompetition and the only three losses ofthe season came from Terre Haute South2-5, Bloomington South 2-5, and Columbus North 3-4. Each match the girlslearned and gained experience for thefollowing years, as the team had nomembers graduate.Led by long-time regulars, juniors KimJackson, Holly Brannon, Susan McGarry,Pam Showalter, Gayle Schreiber, andsophomores Suzie White, Libby Agnew,and Missy Sparks, the team placed second in the Hoosier Hills Conference andalso placed second in the Columbus Sectional. Missy Sparks advanced to theregionals in singles.The girls showed physical fitness aswell as ability during the 1977 season asthe eleven wins prove. They worked hardas a team to improve their winningrecord.All team members will be returningthis season, including juniors Kris Walters, Barb Stuckey, Sandy Farquhar, Stephanie Sweetana, and sophomores JaneBelisle and Jane Hammel. Coach JoyceHolmes is very satisfied with the accomplishments of the 1977 team and is looking forward to an even better season forthe 1978 team.The 1977 girls track team was builtwith the strength of many freshmen.They finished the season with a 3-5record, a fourth in the Hoosier Hills Conference, and a seventh in the sectionals.The team qualified in 11 events for thesectionals including junior Cynthia Boy-kin in the 100-yd dash, junior Lisa Williams in the 80-yd. hurdles, freshmanElsa Osmundson and Carolyn Zimmerman in the mile run, junior MinnieThomas in the shot put, freshman CindyThompson and sophomore CathySchrader in the high jump, sophomoreJeana Pauley in the long jump, JeanaPauley and sophomore Karen Lawson inthe 880-yd. run, and Cynthia Boykin,Jeana Pauley, Carolyn Zimmerman, andsophomore Jackie Smith in the 880-yd.medley relay. Carolyn Zimmerman andElsa Osmundson advanced to the regionals in the mile run but did not advance tostate.The maroon attitude award was wonby sophomore Karen Lawson and thegold outstanding participant award waswon by freshman Carolyn Zimmermanfor the 1977 track season.The 1977 track team consisted of onesenior, five juniors, seven sophomores,and ten freshmen.
