Description: Great Academic OpportunitiesAll of the academicsubjects at North offermany opportunities. Not only are many diverse subjectsavailable in the classroom,but the different departments participate in extracurricular activities.Through the SocialStudies department,students attended seminarsat Indiana University andwere able to participate inthe Close-Up trip toWashington, D.C. Therewere also several writingcontests to enter, includingthose concerning HistoryDay and Lincoln Day.The Foreign Languagedepartment has also beenactive. Students had the opportunity to visit bothFrance and Spain. TheFrench Club also arranged atrip to Kings Island for theWinterfest held. there.North students has alsobeen able to learn aboutother countries by gettingto know the exchangestudents who have come toNorth. The Sciencedepartment has severalstudents who have been involved in science competitions and workshops. Fourstudents participated in theHigh School Science Student Institute sponsored annually by I.U. Seniors DavidBeversdorf and Tanya Curtis were finalists in the Indiana Science TalentSearch. Tanya was alsonamed to the HonorsGroup of the NationalScience Talent Search.The Math departmenthas encouraged students toparticipate in contests.Several persons participated in a math contestheld at Terre Haute. An-tonia Foias placed first inthe individual contest in thesenior division and thesenior team of four excelledin the group competition. Inaddition, a group of eightstudents took first place ata team competition sponsored by the Junior Engineering Technical Society. On March 1, North sponsored the National HighSchool Mathematics Exam.Both the Math andEnglish departments offeredcourses which could betaken for college credit. TheMath course which was offered to the calculus class,was equivalent to I.U.sM215.The instructor wasGreg Peters. Joanne Fryetaught the equivalent ofW131, which was offeredas Current Voices, a seniorEnglish elective. All in all,North students have hadmany opportunities tobecome academically involved. Those who havetaken advantage of theseopportunities are to becommended.60 Academics
