IMark DornGary MossThe B.H.S.N. Band Department hadanother highly successful year, reflectingthe way theyve always represented theschool. Last spring, all three concertbands, under the direction of Gary Moss,went to the state band contest in Martinsville. The Symphonic Band and Concert I Band received superior ratings,while the Concert II Band was awardedan excellent rating.The Advanced Jazz Band enhancedtheir reputation as the finest in the state.Under the direction of Mark Dorn, theband participated in two jazz festivals.At the Elmhurst Jazz Festival in Ft.Wayne, they were named one of twooutstanding bands. At the Ohio StateJazz Festival, they were named the mostoutstanding in the festival. In addition,many individual awards were won. KyleGregory (trumpet) was named the outstanding musician at both festivals. AtElmhurst, Mark Stryker was awardedbest saxophone, Abby Pietsch bestdrummer, and Mike Stryker bestpiano.At Ohio State, Kyle Gregory, DennisRiggins, Mark Stryker, Mike Stryker,David Mizell, and Abby Pietsch, were allnamed to the all festival band.The year ended with an Awards Banquet where Kyle Gregory was given theJohn Philips Sousa award and the outstanding jazz musician award. DavidMizell received the service award.Preparation for the marching seasonbegan this fall with an intensive week ofband camp which climaxed with a performance at the North-South footballgames. In addition to playing at all homegames, the band participated at the Statemarching contest where they received anexcellent rating. This years drum majorswere Beth Harbuch and Chuck Flowers.In December, both the Advanced andBeginning Jazz bands hosted the ThirdAnnual Bloomington Jazz Festival. I.U.professor David Baker and his sextetgave clinics during the day and the concert at night. The entire festival was aunique learning experience.January brought the exciting newsthat seven band members were named tothe all-state band. They were Donna Oliver, Christy Moss, Chuck Flowers, Dennis Riggins, Mark Dodd, David Bush-nell and Mike Ost.B.H.S.
