/Our ShiningSPIRITSpirit. Man, did it ever shine for Homecoming! It seemsthat the change in the election for queen added a new twistthat got everyone involved in the Homecoming preparation.Two weeks before the game, a homeroom was held.Two candidates were nominated from each class. In previous years, this nominating privilege was allowed to thefooball team only. The student body then voted (from thislist) on two finalists for each class, except the seniors. Theseniors were to have four candidates. But as a result of atie, five were elected.Spirit Week started with Sweatshirt day. Tuesday wasClass Uniqueness day. Along with the seniors, freshmenwore hats, sophomores wore crazies, and juniors dressedup. On Wednesday, leather boots, jeans, vests, and cowboyhats were worn as Norths spirit turned western. Thursdaythe windows were painted. Bright colors loudly announcedour spirit. This was the first year for that! That evening, abonfire burned, in effigy, a BNL Star, and chants for aCougar victory were shouted. Friday mornings pep sessionwas rowdy! The cheerleaders held their second annualSpirit Stick—Homecoming queen contest. Gigi Junior wasthe winner of that prize.Each class made a float. Judging was at 6:30 p.m. Seniors won with the slogan A Star Is Torn. At halftime theband gave a fine show and the drill team was great. Then,as the band softly played, the queen finalists were escortedon the field. They were: freshmen Marta Richardson,escorted by Scott Jean and Shelly Chambers, escorted byPhil Lockheart; sophomores Kathy Chamness, escorted bySteve Cory and Lori Schwomeyer, escorted by Jimmy Friedlander; juniors Kim Huddelson, escorted by Mike Minetteand Stephanie Sparks, escorted by John Daerr; seniorsKelly Mitchell, escorted by John Stalcup, Christy Moss,escorted by Manu Jain, Julie Martin, escorted by JimWalls, Dana Campbell, escorted by Chuck Chamness, andKaren Schwomeyer, escorted by Jay Williams. As 1979queen Susan Lawson placed the crown on Karens head, itcant be said people were surprised, but they certainly werepleased.10 |
