Description: ELECTIONS AT BHS yielded the three new classpresidents for 1969. They are Mark Reiger,senior; Leo Scherschel, junior; and Chris Stur-baum, sophomore.Students Participatein PoliticsAS THE unpredictable election year of 1968 progressed, excitingand tragic moments occured for all those involved in the threecampaigns. During the first stirrings of the election severalcandi-dates decided to enter the race for the highest office in the land.For the first time three candidates ran on a peace platform. Thesemen were Eugene McCarthy, Nelson Rockefeller, and Robert Kennedy. The tragic death of Mr. Kennedy caused many eager youthsto become disillusioned with the government and the political system. A new political party was formed known as the AmericanIndependent Party with George Wallace as the nominee for president. The Democratic Party chose Hubert Humphrey as its nomineeand Richard Nixon was nominated by the Republican Party.While many students were busy campaigning nationally othersconcentrated- on the school elections. For the second straight yearstudents were given the choice of voting for individual slates inthe primary election. After the primary students voted for thecandidates of their choice on the voting machines which wereloaned to the school.STUDENTS LEARNED to use the voting machines loaned to the school during theclass elections held early in the school year.
