Description: “The Art of Study”On January 19, 1862, the battle of Mills Spring was fought; on January 19, 1862, the bat--what did you say, Marie? Youd rather see the hair in a psyche than in puffs? Well, I believe I would too--its so much more stylish and has a classical look too, I think. Oh goodness! I never will learn this old history. In 1862--what on earth is the matter with me? In 1862, Bragg invaded Kentucky. Well, what do I care whether he did or not? There! Im not going to try to get any more of it! Say, arent you perfectly wild over Ronald Scotts looks? I just love to hear him talk--that lisp, you know,--and when he laughs, those dimples,--heavenly!Yes, dont you thing Melvin Rhorer is good looking? But honestly, Marie, that little bit of hair that stands out from the back of his head nearly worries me to death. I want to smoothe it down all the time! But then I dont suppose it ought to worry me--Oh, I must get that Latin! Whats the lesson? Oh, yes, can you decline osculum?Oh, Frances, I never decline that.”“Well then, let’s don’t get it tonight--I think that I’ll have time in the morning. What’s the English?”“Why, you aren’t worrying about that, are you? I’m not,-- you know Cleveland won’t notice it! Isn’t he perfectly lovely? Why, he does most all of the talking himself and says some real funny things, too. Have I got my Geometry? Goodness, no! But I’m going to get it right now. Let’s see, in the triangle AGC, let B be a right angle,--say, don’t you think Walter Pfrim-mer is a cute little boy? I think he has such dear little pink cheeks,--but this proposition,--on the side BC, erect the square BD, on the side AB, the square AH,--on the side-Oh, I saw Winnie up town today. Say, do you like her hat? Isn’t it big? But I am crazy about big ones. What do you think she told me? That Tom had been out to Lucy’s for the last three nights,--they’re made--up again, you know. Cases--I wonder if I shall ever have such a bad one. But oh, this Geometry-Where was I?--Oh yes, the side AC,--the side AE. Draw the line--Oh! I can’t get this--Let’s get our Physics lesson.”“Oh no! Why, who cares why there is no dew on a windy night? Or whether the surface of stoves and heat radiators should be polished or not? I’m sure I don’t. Say, how’s your Senior reception dress made?”“Oh, it’s just too dear for anything! Empire effect, you Know--it’s pale yellow messaline, you know--Oh we must get this Physics--What would we do if we didn’t get our credits, Frances? Say did you ever see a girl with so much air as Helen Beck? Do you suppose--”46
