Paul Norman, Tom Hill,Warren May, Ken Wright, Rick Bartholomew, Dan Dro, RustyVeteran coaches Fred Huff and Al Gallo combined to produce another highly successful football team in 1967. The Panthers compiled an admirable 8-1-1 record against tough competition.After winning their first three games, the Panthers went north to challenge the highly-toutedKokomo Cats. Using a play patterned after thefamous Green Bay Sweep, the Panther backs ranwild, running up a score of 21 to 6.BSHS gridders had an outstanding second halfagainst Jeffersonville to even the score at 19-19,after Jeffersonville had established a commanding19-0 lead. The team then went on to win their nexttwo games paced by a potent offensive attackand an impregnable defense.The Panthers only defeat came toward the endof the season at the hands of Columbus. The outcome of the game hinged on a highly disputedplay in which BSHS halfback, J. W. Huff, plungedfrom the two-yard line and seemingly penetratedthe Columbus goal line.Richardson, Dan Grossman. Last row: Bob Keough, manager,Steve Creech, student trainer, Gary Ragatz, John Cornwell, SteveKillion, Ernie Robertson, Dave McClain, Charlie Byrnes.The official ruled otherwise and the Pantherswere forced to surrender the ball.The Panthers closed their season with a 27-7win over Muncie Central on a rain-soaked field.Coach Huff cited quickness all the way aroundas the main asset of the 67 team and gave specialpraise to the Panther defensive unit, led by suchstandouts as Keith Mercer, Dan Dro, Rusty Richardson, Keith Morran, Dan Grossman, and CharlieByrnes.Individually, five players contributed 40 or morepoints to the Panther cause. Senior All-State endKeith Mercer led the team in scoring with 67points. Mercer was followed by halfback KenWright who scored 54 points. Additional scoringwas provided by All-Stater J. W. Huff with 43points, and juniors Dan Grossman and CharlieByrnes, both of whom accounted for 42 points.121
