Panther Gridders Take 1st SCC TitleJ. W. HUFF POUNDS OUT VALUABLE YARDAGE againstSCC foe Columbus. BSHS won 25-19.The Bloomington Panthers won their first conference championship in football this season. Thegridders have a 6-0 record for the SCC and a 9-1overall season record. BSHS had a slow start,stumbling over Ben Davis 14-0 with only defensivescoring. In the second game, the offense was stillunable to move efficiently, and the defense letdown to allow New Albany to cross the Panthergoal line twice. A little shifting around on offenseand the abundant teamwork, desire, and high competitive spirit among the players carried the teamto eight straight wins. The 1966 season was CoachFred Huffs second best season, the best being in1964 when the team went 10-0. By defeating highranking teams such as Jeffersonville and CrispusAttucks, and while coming close to New Albany,the Panthers were ranked 12th in the state prepratings.In Coach Huffs opinion, it was difficult, if notimpossible to single out the players with the mostability and skill. This seasons team had depth andgave 110% effort. Players selected for the AllConference team were Brian Flaten, tackle, SteveCarmichael, end; J. W. Huff, halfback; LarrySmith and Ike Mefford, fullbacks; and Fred Huffwas named All Conference coach. Steve Carmichaelwas also named to the All State team.
