On a wet September 26th, theparade was the kick-off. This years parade had a newlook. Instead of the mile-long string of students marching to town, a more-organized parade represented theschool. The parade ended in an all-school pep session onthe football field. The ball game with Columbus on Saturday provided a climax for students and alumni alike.At half time the score was tied 0-0. The band presenteda half-time show depicting sports of each season. To thetune of Auld Lang Syne, queen candidates CathyHinkle, Sue Cox, Joann Richardson, Donna Lettellier,Barbara Somes, and Janet Wampler were escorted throughan aisle formed by the band. The suspense ended whenMr. Brock announced Cathy Hinkle as the 1959 Homecoming Queen. In the fourth quarter, fate was lookingover the Panthers shoulder. Columbus scored a safetymaking the score 2-0. After the ball was moved to scoring position, Don Wampler made a last-second grab andcaught the pass that scored the only touchdown of thegame. With just one second left in the game, the teamquieted down long enough to score the extra point, making the score 7-2, a climax to a perfect day.Sue Cox, Barbara Somes, Janet Wampler, Cathy Hinkle, Donna Lettellier,and Joann Richardson pose on the field at half-time.14
