Description: TV BandB BandAnd the band played on! might easily be thethought of anyone listening to one of the bandspractice sessions, which are held daily duringthe 4th period. Only students in the upper fourgrades are admitted into the A band. Theband has been enlarged this year and is nowcomposed of slightly more than 100 students.To provide for this enlargement, 20 new banduniforms were purchased. The bands six majorettes also sported new outfits. They were whitewith gold braid, and blue plumes topped thewhite hats.The band members had a busy schedule thisyear. They not only have provided B.H.S. andits visitors with good entertainment during thehalftimes at home football games, but they haveparticipated in such other activities as the I. U.Band Day program, the Halloween parade, thefire prevention parade, the annual homecomingparade, and some pep sessions. They also took ashort trip to Ellettsville to perform during theFall Festival. The pep band, a small group composed from the A band, has put on performances during two school convocations.The officers of the A band this year wereTony McMillan, president; Dick Tardy, vice-president; Marilyn Smith, secretary; Becky Bryant, treasurer; and John Parker, student drillmaster and director. Mr. Carl W. Frye is thedirector of the band.The second band at Bloomington High Schoolis called the B band. This group is composedof some 68 or 69 students, most of them jr. highpupils, plus two twirlers and the drum major.The B band is primarily a feeder group for theA band. It is concerned for the most part withthe fundamentals of band playing. The B bandalso has what is called challenge. The challengesystem gives the members of the band a chanceto advance to a higher position. The seating arrangement depends upon their proficiency inplaying the required materials. The B bandheld class on Monday and Wednesday duringthe 2nd period. Several extra rehearsals werealso called.Some of the activities of the B band thisyear included marching in the Halloween parade, participating in the halftime program ofone of the B.H.S. home football games, participating in the annual spring music festival,and playing in a combined convocation for thestudent body. Also, the band played for a fewconvocations in various elementary schools.The officers of the B band this year wereRichard Sparks, president; Kent Lawson, vice-president; Donna Burroughs, secretary-treasurer;and Joe Curtis, librarian.
