Hard work, determination, and strenuous practice paid dividendsas the team ended the season with a. great recordof eight victories, one tie, and one loss.The Huffmen opened their season September10 with a 25-7 victory over a tough and underrated Sullivan squad and followed that with a28-6 triumph over the New Albany Bulldogs. OnSeptember 25 the Panthers received a chance toprove themselves a top-notch ballclub when theymet the Irish of Cathedral, Indianapolis. ThePurples took the advantage with a 19-0 win.Next the boys rolled over the WashingtonHatchets 26-0, and then trounced the ColumbusBulldogs, 19-0. It was then that people knew thatthese Panthers were more than just a run ofthe mill team. The Lawrenceburg Tigers werethe next to feel the brunt of the Panther power,as the squad journeyed to the Ohio River cityand gave a terrific display both offensively anddefensively in a 45-0 rout. Injuries in practiceto key players played an important part in athrilling 13-13 deadlock with the highly-ratedWiley Red Streaks. Twice the Purples wereforced to come from behind to gain a tie. AtVincennes the Alices also gave the boys quite ascare as they scored two quick touchdowns, butthe Purples rallied both times and came back totake a 13-12 verdict.The Panthers ended the home season on November 5 with an exciting 7-0 decision over thepreviously undefeated Garfield Purple Eagles.Because of consistant rains the field was soggyand muddy, and neither team was able to showmuch of its true power. For the final game,November 11, the Panthers traveled to Evansville, with good chance to spoil the perfect recordof the Reitz squad, which was finally to becomethe mythical state champion. At the start thePurples fumbled, Reitz recovered and scored.The Panthers stumbled at the threshold of fameand fell in a 39-0 loss. It was the second time intwo years that Reitz had spoiled a perfect seasonfor Bloomington.In three of the last four games, the team .facedundefeated squads. Garfield and Wiley wereranked high all season and Reitz was voted thebest prep football team in the state. The Purplescame through in fine style despite facing such atough schedule as this. Also adding to the listof honors, several of the boys earned berths ormention on many of the various All-State andAll-Conference teams.
