Description: Football SeasonWe want a touchdown! We want a touchdown! This was a familiar cry of B.H.S. football fans during the 1946 gridiron season. Theopening game against the Huntingburg HappyHunters ended victoriously for the Panthers witha score of 26-0. This was more than a victoryover Huntingburg; it was a victory over a changefrom a double wing and box formation to the Tin the short time our new coach was in command. The Panthers outplayed the tough Centralof Evansville Golden Bears in the first half onlyto lose by a score of 14-0. The heartbreaker ofthe season was the game against New Albany.Although our team played a good game of ball—with Finley running 60 yards for a touchdown—the New Albany Bulldogs booted a field goal inthe last three seconds, and thus won the game10-7. Another last minute loss was to the BrazilRed Devils who won by a score of 6-0. Our boysmanaged to cross the goal-line once during thegame but were called back for backfield inmotion. The Panthers outplayed and outscoredthe Washington Hatchets by a score of 34-0.Most of our reserves saw action in this game.Losing some of its former drive, the team wasdefeated by the Columbus Bulldogs 20-0. ThePanthers met their Waterloo at the hands of theMuncie Bearcats—champions of the NorthernCentral Conference. This was the worst defeatof the season with a score of 35-0. The fourthquarter rally in the game with the Linton Minersfell short on the one yard stripe as the gameended with the Miners on top 10-0. The PurplePanthers held the Wiley Red Streaks to a scoreless tie in our last home game. This game wasslowed down by a steady down-pour and a verymuddy field. The last game of the season sawthe injury-ridden Panthers try valiantly for avictory, but to no avail for they were outplayedby the fast Red Devils of West Lafayette by ascore of 12-0. However, scores only partially tellthe story—for win or lose, teamwork and harmony among the boys are valuable assets to theteam.Line and BackfieldLine—Paul Newton, Rex Brummett, Boyd Haley, Robert Sipes, Kenneth Brashaber, David Pitcher, James Dixon.Backfield—Don Blottie, James Deal, Kenneth Finnley, Dick Lyon.
