Description: HHilihMMMWMMMCLASS HISTORYSeptember of 1936 marked the entrance of 286 freshmen, destined to bethe class of 1940, into the trials and tribulations of high school life. Threeyears later these same students again put in an appearance when they chosethree members of their class to be their leaders during their senior year andall of its activities. They were: Robert Bartlett, president; George Reed,secretary; and Barbara Branam, treasurer. Mrs. Krueger and Mr. Polingwere chosen class sponsors. Chilton Brown was chosen Gothic editor andWilliam Ratchford, business manager.In accordance with tradition, the juniors entertained the class of 39 atthe annual Junior Prom. The juniors chose the Japanese word Sayonara,meaning since it must be so, as their theme. The gym was decorated withvaried colored streamers arranged to form a pagoda. Lattice work trimmedwith dogwood blossoms was placed at intervals. The class of 40 broke tradition by electing a prom king as well as a queen. With all due pomp andceremony Ellen Parham was crowned prom queen and Bob BencJ*art, promkine- ^G^ >feThe fall found the seniors officially opening the school year with the election of Robert Benckart, vice president; the launching of the Gothic campaign with a memorable convocation; and tryouts for the senior play.For their first senior play the seniors presented The Amazons, a smashing comedy hit, and the most singularly different play ever given in B.H.S.In January the seniors held a guest dance in the Girls Gym.February found the seniors altering tradition again by giving the Reception for parents and faculty earlier than usual. The Gothic report, a treasurers report, and a summary of class history up to February were given. Aspart of the program, skits from the next senior play were presented. Refreshments were served by Miss Stuart and senior members of her boyshome economics class.February 22, 23, the class of 40 scored another hit when they presentedthe production of June Mad as their second play of the year.To further their reputation as the most original class the seniors introduced the square dance in Bloomington High School at their hilariousBums Ball.Then came May and all of the activities and events associated with graduation : the Honor Society banquet, the Junior-Senior Prom, the Senior banquet, and finally the last events in the seniors high school life, Baccalaureateand Commencement.The four years from September 36 to May 40, will always be rememberedby 287 more young men and women who look back on their high school careers with fond reminiscent smiles.Page nineteenmxxt%tnuaMmKmmmmK^^
