THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETYThe National Honor Society was established in February, 1921, for theprimary purpose of recognizing students attaining intellectual and spiritualdistinction during their four years in high school. Beginning with a singlechapter in the east, there are now 1653 chapters in the States, nine in thePhilippine Islands, four in Hawaii, two in Puerto Rico and one in the AmericanSchool in Shanghai, China.The object of this body is four-fold: to create an enthusiasm for scholarship,to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and toencourage character in the pupils in the high schools.To qualify for membership in this organization a student must be in theupper one-fourth of the Senior class. From this group, members not to exceedfifteen per cent of the class are chosen by the composite vote of those membersof the faculty who know the students well enough to judge them. Four requirements of those selected are: high scholarship, fine character, worthy leadership, and self-forgetting faithful service. To a number of outstanding students, not to exceed three per cent of their class, comes the added distinctionof being chosen in their junior year.Standing—Mr. Tatlock, Bob Weatherwax,Kenneth Browning, Arlie Hillsamer.Sitting—Kathryn Jane Alexander,Hanson, Joan Mitchell, Betty Wray.BettyCHRISTMAS CHEERCOMMITTEEAgain this year the Christmas CheerCommittee was in charge of the Christmas basket drive to bring food and happiness to the needy on Christmas Day.With the home rooms doing theirpart in bringing food, the Junior andSenior High School filled approximately250 baskets, having for their slogan:Let it be a rule in B. H. S. that NoFamily Goes Hungry on Christmas,and A Mile of Dimes Brings Miles ofSmiles. The Committee received donations in the form of rules to purchasethe perishables for the baskets.<: |
