Description: EwBliiBiMHKfATHEETICSaHAROLD F. MUMBYA. L. PHILLIPSMAJOR SPORTS 1932-33Bloomington High School is very fortunate in having such men asA. L. Phillips and H. F. Mumby as coaches of the major sports. In thepast years Bloomington has gained wide recognition for the high standards it has established in athletics. This year, Mr. Phillips, with the assistance of B. F. Miller, successfully molded practically new recruits intoa basketball team dangerous to all its opponents. Bloomington openedits season September 2, and barely nosed out a surprisingly strong Spencer team. On December 9 the Panthers were obliged to take a trimmingfrom their traditional rivals, the Stonecutters of Bedford. However, thisdefeat was avenged on January 27, of the new year, when B. H. S. invadedthe Bedford gym and came away with a well-earned victory. Althoughthe Panthers encountered many strong teams during the season, they managed to come out on top by winning games from Columbus, Bloomfield,Greencastle, Salem, Mitchell, Bedford, and Vincennes; by tying a thrillinggame with Sullivan; and by losing only to Martinsville, Shortridge, Shel-byville, and Columbus. In football, Mr. Mumby, with the assistance of W. N. Baker, wasable to produce a team that was beaten only once. The football seasonwas successfully opened September 17 when Worthington came to B. H. S.and was badly beaten. On the following Friday, September 23, the Panthers traveled to Bloomfield and were again triumphant. The rest of thegames were similar to these with the exception of the game with Technical of Indianapolis, which ended in a scoreless tie. The season ended witha game on Armistice Day, in which Elwood was able to gain a 6-0 victory. The wonderful record of Coach Mumbys team greatly overshadowed thisone defeat.(73)
