Description: BASKETBALLBASKETBALLJust to welcome the new year in the proper spirit, the boys defeated Washingtonof Indianapolis in the local gymnasium. This contest was also very exciting. It appeared to be either teams game until the last few minutes, when the local quintet put on asudden burst of speed and ran away with the game, 39 to 28. Again the spirit of thesupporters and team members was aroused and the outlook for Bloomnigtons futurewas very bright.The next week-end the Panthers continued their winning streak by submergingBloomfield, 45 to 21. This was the most overwhelming victory of the season.The Bloomfield game gave a lot of the reserves a chance to see action, and it gave CoachPhillips an opportunity to use new combinations. When the squad returned home fromBloomfield, a successful season seemed assured.On January 16, Bloomington High Schools basketball squad started a series ofdefeats which proved disastrous to the hopes of the local followers of basketball.Although the remainder of the season was just one defeat after another, a large portionof the student body stood loyally behind the team through it all.On January 16 the Panthers played Salem. The game was close and thrilling, andthe outcome was doubtful until the the last few seconds of play in which Salem madea lucky basket and ended the game 27 to 26 in their favor. The following night thelocals journeyed to Lafayette to play in the college town tourney along with Jeffersonof Lafayette, Crawfordsville, and Greencastle. Jefferson defeated the Panthers 19 to 18in the afternoon, and Crawfordsville beat us again at night.In the next two weeks Bloomington met its two worst rivals, Martinsville and Bedford. Against Martinsville the Panthers played a brilliant game, but came out at thelow end of the score, 24 to 30. Against our other opponent the locals played inspiredball the first half, then slumped in the second and lost the game 3 3 to 19.On the following week-ends Bloomington dropped games to Greencastle and Vincennes here, and to Morton of Richmond and Central of Evansville on their playingfloors. February 21 and 27 the Panthers met two of the states strongest aggregations,Columbus and Shelbyville, and in each game provided brilliant competition. They lostthe battle to Columbus, 2 8 to 30, and were defeated by Shelbyville, 36 to 24. The nightafter the Shelbyville game the squad closed the season with a defeat at the hands ofGreensburgs sharpshooters, 30 to 17.The following week-end the Panthers participated in the Sectional Tourney held atMartinsville. On Friday night our team overpowered Smithville, 29 to 23, but the following afternoon Bloomington was eliminated by Stinesville in a close game, 34 to 29.Although Coach Phillips will have a lot of good material from which to pick his1931-32 basketball team, he will miss the services of several graduating seniors: Spriggs,Young, Bartlett, Smith, and McElvain. The men who were awarded their major Bin basketball are: Joe Spriggs (captain), Howard Young, Hubert Barrow, Walter McElvain, Curtis Curry, Lewis Smith, and Archie Bridwell (manager).Page Seventy-one
