The Bloomington High School basketeers openedthe 1931-32 schedule with a well-earned victory overa fast moving Brazil quintet by a score of 17 to 16.Our next opponent, Spencer, afforded little opposition. The Panthers easily subdued them by a scoreof 32 to 11. In this game Coach Phillips used theentire squad.Wiley of Terre Haute, our next opponents, wererouted to the tune of 37 to 20. Wiley offered littlestrength and were the losers from the opening whistle.The following week the Panthers met their ancient rivals, Bedford. Backed by a large crowd ofBloomington fans, the locals eked out a 22 to 18 victory. Time and again we were behind, but throughfight and determination gained a lead and maintainedit to the end.Handicapped by several misfortunes, the Panthersmet defeat at the hands of a highly polished Vincennes five by a score of 30 to 9. In this game the locals did not lose their fight, but wereunable to get their basket eyes working. Failing to score, their defense cracked and Vincennes fast forwards scored easily.With more fight and determination than ever, the scrapping Panthers subdued ourancient and bitter rival, Martinsville. The final score was 27 to 20. This victory marked the first win over Martinsville in eight years, and many fans looked forward to avictorious sectional.Columbus with a veteran five, furnished the next opposition for the locals. The Bulldogs were able to come from behind and grab a 24 to 23 victory.A 3 8 to 19 victory over Bloomfield followed this heart-breaking defeat. The Bloomfield five was unable to offer strong competition, and Coach Phillips used many differentcombinations endeavoring to find the most successful one.Next the Panthers gained state-wide recognition by defeating Greencastle, runner-upin the state tourney last year, with a score of 17 to 14.The locals fell before a fast and clever five at Salem by the close margin of 19 to 18.Playing an entirely different style of basketball the next night the Panthers subduedMitchell by the close score of 28 to 24.Martinsville came to life in the next game and evened matters with our boys by atop-heavy score of 2 5 to 13. Bedford followed in Martinsvilles steps in evening up matters by finishing fast in the last quarter. The final score was 30 to 25.A 34 to 14 defeat was handed to the locals by a smart, smooth-running Columbusaggregation. Mitchell increased our losing streak by trouncing the Panthers on theirhome floor by the score of 22 to 19. The next Thursday night Vincennes came backafter a slow first half and defeated the locals 26 to 15.Sullivan afforded little opposition for our team and the Panthers returned to thewinning column by virtue of a 28 to 18 victory. Lacking fight and inability to hit thebasket caused the locals a surprising defeat at the hands of the Greensburg team. Thefinal score being 24 to 20.Shelbyville closed the regular season for us in the local gymnasium, and walked homewith a victory by a score of 26 to 21.In the sectional tournament after defeating Smithville, Elletsville, and Martinsville,Bloomington fell before Monrovia in the final game by the score of 23 to 18.Page Fifty-fiveGOTVi£»I |
