THE 1927-28 BASKETBALL SEASONBasketball was started early this year in preparation for the hard scheduleon hand. Branam, Sears and Duncan were the only veterans left from lastyears team, so an entirely new combination had to be developed. The menwere put to hard drill and soon rounded out into a well coordinated basketballmachine.The first game was played with Spencer, here. It was a well fought game,the final score being 26 to 16 for the Panthers. With the stimulus of thisvictory they were able to defeat Mooresville the following Friday by a largescore, 50 to 25. Martinsville came next and the locals were forced to bow tothe greater size and experience of their opponents. This loss, however, onlyspurred the team on to greater efforts, for the next week Salem was walloped56 to 20. Columbus came over and defeated the Purple 53 to 49 in a hecticbattle in which the lead see-sawed back and forth. Vincennes was defeated32 to 30 the next week. Then everybody journeyed to Bedford to see theteam beat the Stone City Lads for the first time in thirteen consecutive attempts.It was a glorious victory, one of the best of the year.Clifford Wells, former coach of B. H. S. brought his Loganberries downand defeated the locals but only after a very hard struggle. The next week areturn game was played at Logansport and again our team suffered defeat.Two days later the Panthers played a return game with Columbus and lost ina ragged and uninteresting affair. The team journeyed to Rushville anddropped another, this time by one point. Washington played here next andwon by a single point margin 23-22. At this time the Panthers again hittheir stride and defeated the strong Newcastle team, 39 to 21. Then,although we outplayed Martinsville on their home floor during the entire second half, we lost one more game to the State Champs. Shelbyville was defeated with ease by an overwhelming margin. Then came the return gamewith Bedford here, and the Panthers were beaten, 45 to 28. On a trip toWashington and Vincennes the Panthers defeated the Hatchets and lost to theAlices. They came home and defeated Mitchell and Owensville with ease. Thelast game was played with Technical of Indianapolis, which resulted in anotherwin for the Purple.Eleven games were won this year and 10 lost. This constitutes the mostsuccessful season the school has had for years. The team scored 769 pointsand their opponents scored 695.In the sectional tournament at Martinsville, Bloomington defeated Smith-ville and then lost to Martinsville in a hard fought struggle.Page Seventy-eight |
