Bloomington High School, The Gothic, 1928, Page 66

Description: During the first few years of its existence, Bloomington High School didnot participate in any athletic contests. Track was probably the first sport inwhich our teams competed with those from other schools, as Bloomington isrecorded as being one of the first members of the South Central Association. This is still an active organization, sponsoring meetings at various cities insouthern Indiana every season. As early as 1901, under the auspices of thisassociation, Bloomington won a meet on the local field. The fact that therewere approximately 1,800 spectators gives some indication of the interestaroused by this sport. In 1904 we won the state championship. Our lastnotable achievement in this sport was the winning of the South Central RelayRace in 1927.Football was first played in 1897, at which date Bloomington had thestrongest team in the state. In 1914 the sport was discontinued and was notresumed until 1923. Since that time, however, it has been an importantbranch of athletics in Bloomington High School. Although our success inrecent years has been rather indifferent, the teams of the past have establisheda strong reputation for us to live up to, and at present, in spite of a seemingindifference on the part of the students, football is becoming one of our majorsports. In 1907 the first High School Athletic Association was organized. Itspurpose was to raise money for the support of athletics and to arouse schoolinterest. At the same time a standard B and a system of rules for awardingwere adopted. Recently, however, the rules have been revised and enlarged upon.Basketball is a comparatively new sport. A few games were played in1911-12, but in 1913, due to lack of a playing floor, the team had to disband. The gymnasium contained in the new building erected in 1914 gave a newimpetus to the game, which culminated in our winning the state championshipin 1919. However, owing to the increasing popularity of basketball amongthe students and townspeople, the need for a new gymnasium began to be felt. The desire for a bigger and better gymnasium was realized during the year1926-27, when a new gymnasium, having a seating capacity of over 4,000, wasbuilt at a cost of $125,000.In its earlier years B. H. S. had several good baseball teams, but in recenttimes baseball as a sport has been gradually losing favor among the students. Our wrestling record is excellent. Wrestling was introduced in 1921, andthe team continued to grow in strength until 1924, when we won the statemeet 14 points ahead of Monticello, our nearest competitor. In 1925 we againwon the state, but by a smaller margin, being only 3 points ahead of Monticello. Last year, 1926-27, although our team failed to win first as a team, three of our boys placed in the finals.Page Sixty-six
