Plantation DavsyThe annual senior minstrel, Plantation Days, was given at the HarrisGrand Theatre, February 15 and 16. With the Charleston chorus of pickaninnies and the circle of negroes before a background representing an old colonialmansion and grounds, the packed house enjoyed a musical and dance programas clever and as well-executed as the best of amateur performances. WinfredTurpin, playing endman with Hugh Thompson, again scored a success withhis originality. The male quartette received furious ovations with Show Methe Way to Go Home. Martha Temples solo added another item to herrapidly increasing list of successes.In the girls chorus were: Frances Connor, Analie Shaw, Peggy Culmer,Kathryn Bryant, Gertrude Schwab, Velda Hazel, Helen Townsend, WilmaThrasher, Mildred Curry, Alice McHenry, Phyllis Smallwood, Blanche Moore,and Mina Dugger. In the boys chorus were: Elmo Gilliat, Ewing Cox, JimmieDamrell, Bert Whaley, John Foley, Yadon Spencer, Bill Costas, Chas. Holland,Frank Woodburn, Paul Miller, and Bob Peterson. Endmen, Winfred Turpinand Hugh Thompson. Interlocutor, Phil Borland.The minstrel was directed by Dale Ferguson, Miss Kathryn Wellman andMiss Jack.The Gypsy TrailThe June Senior class presented The Gypsy Trail on May 13 and 14 inthe High School auditorium.The plot concerns the romantic young heroine, Frances, who is not at allattracted by the steady matter-of-factness of her suitor, Ned, but longs for someyoung Lochinvar to come out of the west and elope with her. A young manappears first as a newspaper reporter, next as a carefree young man out of a job,then as a chauffeur hired for the evening, a young man who is as wildly romantic as any maiden heart could wish. He regales the young woman with glowingaccounts of his adventures along the gypsy trail, free from care and conventions.He wakes up from his dreaming aloud to find himself engaged. He runs awayfrom the responsibility, only to come back because he is really in love. Hefinds that Frances is not so romantic after all and wants the regular dependablekind of husband which he consents to be.The entire cast was not chosen at the time the Gothic went to press.The play was coached very ably by Miss Freida Stengel. |
