Bloomington High School, The Gothic, 1917, Page 62

Description: State TourneyIN the classic State Tournament B. H. S. drew the Lafayette team. State Champions of 1915-16. Lafayette went into the contest the favorite because of the lightness and lick of experience of the Blooming-ton team. A large crowd was on hand to cheer B. H. S. to victory. From the start the Purple and White seemed masters of the situation, and they were at no time in danger until with three substitutes in the game and four personal fouls on back guard Dobbins, it became necessary to finish the game with four play-ers. For a minute Lafayette braced but then slowly gave way under the defensive tactics of the Purple and White and finally, after several minutes of strenuous playing, was forced to bow in defeat 23 to 13. By winnning this game Bloomington was thrown against Martinsville in the evening contest. The largest crowd which had ever been in the New Gymnasium turned out for the contest--it was an ideal setting for a championship contest. Both teams fought furiously for an advantage in the first half, but each team was reluctant and Martinsville finished the half with only a slight lead. In the second half Bloomington came back hard and led Martinsville by several points until there were but thirty seconds to play. Aided by a foul Martinsville tied the score and the regular game ended 16 to 16. In the five minute overtime period each team worked desperately for an advantage and it looked as though the Purple and White would surely be victorious. But the breaks of luck turned against Bloomington and we were barely beaten 18 to 16.Our team was defeated, but it took the hardest kind of playing to do it. With but one of the members of the 1916-17 squad leaving School, next year Bloomington will be much harder to put out of running, and should by consistent, clean basketball go farther in the State Tournament than any prev-ious Bloomington High School team has gone.
