S.Top--Hamer Finn, Victor Hiestand, Francis Gerhart, Philip Stroup, William Binkley.Bottom--Vera Grant, Pauline Griffin, Alice Bierman, Maredith Heaton, Helen Thomas.Philomatheon ClubThere had to be some means of preserving and storing up the surplus “hot air” in school,so Hamer Finn found the means in the form of a club. The “BIG TEN” winners in thedebating try-out, because of their amplitude of voice and mouth were chosen for the originalpreservers.“THE TEN” met early in the term in the History Office, and due to his interest andmagnanimity of speech, speedily elected Philip Stroup a charter member. At this meetingHamer Finn was elected to lead in the preservation of the “air,” assisted by Victor Hiestand.Pauline Griffin obtained the right to keep all of the secrets of the “ten” plus Philip Stroup,in the minute book, while Bill Binkley gained the privilege of holding the “kale,” (of whichthe club has none, up to this time). In danger such a volume of gas might explode withoutbeing carefully guarded, Mr. Hamilton was “put on guard.”The next they did was to decide to call themselves by a name that no one outside of theclub has been able to say--The Philomatheon Club. It means something bigger, even, thanit sounds, but youll have to be a Preserver or Philomatheon before you know.Fifty-nineImage alt-text: Black-and-white formal group photograph of ten individuals, arranged into two rows. |
