Description: BHSIn the great European war just closed, the Alumni of B. H. S. manifestedthe same zeal and ardor which had fired their forefathers to deeds of patriotism.Bravely, gladly they volunteered to do their duty when their country called.About four hundred from Bloomington High School served in the army of theUnited States. Ten gave their lives in service. Those who made the greatsacrifice were Joseph Barclay, Bruce Chambers, Horace Hay, John Heitger,Wilburn Hunter, Hoyt Massy, Laurens Strain, Wallace Sumner, Richard Wag-ner, Hattie Wylie and Burton Woolery. Well may Bloomington High Schoolbe proud of these heroes who fell. Yet many of the boys never reached theother side. Not less are they to be praised for had they been given the sameopportunities as the others they would have manifested like bravery. The boys then in school, not to be outclassed in patriotism, took up mili-tary training. It was not always pleasant to drill in cold and rain, to be or-dered about by other boys, but they did not falter, hoping to prepare them-selves if the time should come when they too, would be needed. The trainingwas first begun under the direction of Lieut. Jerry Green. He was strickenwith influenza and died. He was liked and respected by all the boys. Thenext term the training was carried on by Lieut. Paul Feltus.Bloomington High School has also taught her pupils loyalty, devotion, andthe spirit of fellowship. The loyalty and the backing of the school has al-ways been of the best. Whatever project has been undertaken by the schoolthe pupils have shown their willingness to give their time, money and supportto it. Especially has this been true in basketball. The first basketball team was organized in 1912. With eagerness and en-thusiasm they went into the fight and emerged winners of the sectional tourna-ment. Every year thereafter they played with the same result, hoping alwaysto attain a higher plane, that of state championship. Last year the team, coached by Clifford Wells, went to Lafayette with the determination to winthe state title. The high school pupils had the same determination. Andwin they did. Glory and honor had been won and the spirit of BloomingtonHigh remained.Page twentyImage alt-text: Black-and-white photograph, taken outside, of many individuals standing in a field, all in uniforms.
