Description: |
MusicThe departure of Mrs. Faris before the end of the termlast year left the Music Department crippled. During thefirst of last term the place was filled for the first time byMiss Ida Peterson. Miss Peterson was very anxious tomake music popular in Bloomington High, and was signallysuccessful in organizing a Girls as well as a Boys GleeClub. The school was very much alive to the music idea forsome time. Probably a series of entertainments would havebest kept this interest at its highest, but for reason of lackof money the Department was unable for some time tomake marked advance. There was, apparently, no special interest in the idea offorming an orchestra, and the matter was dropped. Indi-vidual musicians among the students, however, have meanwhile been practicing frequently, and have given some finerenderings at various school affairs.Notable among the music people are Francis Wells andhis violin, Hugh Woods Norman on the clarinet, VistaHudelson at the piano. Several good voices have been de-veloped and prospects are good for the Glee Clubs nextyear. Plenty of chance to sing in public is what the mem-bers wish most of all. Certainly an orchestra would alsobe welcome next year. The quartet composed of Ben Smith, Paul Gaskins,Russell Blakely and Lewis Cook has attained a widespreadfame. Ears are always alert when the quartet prepares toroll them bones.Page Fifty-six |
