Tankers Depth Yields Second State TitleA REPEAT of last years statechampionship preceded by another perfect season added morechapters to the already unbelievable success story of the BHSswim team. Formed just five yearsago, the tankers have posted progressive state finishes of 14th,10th, sixth, first and first in theirunprecedented rise to prominence. Leading this years teamwere super-soph. Mike Kearney,a double winner in the state, andIndianas outstanding swimmer,senior Jack Deppe. What fewperformers were lost from lastyears team was more than madeup for by the addition of CareyStapelton, Brian Counsilman, JohnKomorita and Doug Deppe. Aswitch from diving to freestylingby Matt Leininger, necessitated bya back injury, and the improvedswimming, of veterans GordenReynolds, Dave Chapman, ChrisBartlett and Paul Komorita gavethe Panthers the depth necessaryto bring home the state crown.Coach Ed Talley, who holds thedubious distinction of beingBloomingtons most anonymousathletic coach, turned in anotherflawless job and was the proudrecipient of his first graduatingclass special thanks in a speechdelivered by the team spokesman,Dave Chapman, during a seasonending appreciation convocation.LEFT PAGE TOP: Mike Kearney churnshome in 53.5 to win the 100 yard butterfly at Muncie.
