Records Fall As Streak Reaches 41THE FOLLOWING week Bloom-ington traveled to Martinsville toplay a team that had a 5-0 recordand a feeling that they could beat theteam that humiliated them 84-0 theyear before. A crowd of 7,000 fanspacked the Artiesans stadium to witness the battle for the SCC championship. Bloomington moved theball well in the first half but wereunable to score and at halftime thescore was tied at 0-0. In the thirdquarter the Panthers exploded forfour touchdowns in six minutes,with Ralph Henry and John Rutledgeof the defense each scoring one.Most of the Panther offense duringthe 27-0 victory was generated byfullback Dave Whaley who gained180 yards. Bloomington was onlyone game away from the all-time Indiana record for consecutive victories as they faced Connersville athome the following week. Thearoused Panther team took it to thehapless Spartans 65-7. After the contest the team presented the game ballto retired coach, Fred Huff, who wasat the Panther helm during the first21 victories of the streak.After a road victory overGreensburg the undefeated gridderstraveled to Terre Haute South foranother game on astroturf. After apoor first half the Panther machinehit high gear, scoring 28 quickpoints, and then coasted in for a 42-6victc^y. The final game of the seasonwas a long awaited battle with cross-town rival University. The Univeeswere no match for the BHS gridderswho chalked up #10 by the score of49-8. And thus the challenge wasmet. The streak and a chapter in alegend was theirs. |
