Description: On March 5th, students and staff of Aurorapresented information about the school at TheEducational Opportunity Program for At-RiskStudents State Conference in Indianapolis.The title of the presentation was “Starting anAlternative School from Scratch.” TheyAmee Yoder and Heather Sample talkedabout the lack of resources and the difficulty ofscheduling. Jan Hagemeyer and Chrissy Quicktalked about the process of admissions such asenrollment criteria and procedures. AlthoughChuck didn’t do a presentation, he answeredAurora Staff and Students Share Problems andSuccesses at Indianapolis Conferencediscussed successes and problems encounteredin the creation of the school.Chuck introduced the idea of presenting instead of just attending the conferencebecause of the interest Aurora has generatedthroughout the state. Chuck said, “ Manypeople had been calling to inquire aboutstarting an alternative school. I believed therewould be high interest for our topic.” Althoughsome staff members were intimidated by theidea of presenting, eventually everyonethought it would be a worthwhile opportunity.Bob Jacobs and Craig Ferree talkedabout the rules and the contract every studentquestions from the audience.Asked about the reaction to the presentation, Bob said, “ The audience was very interested. They asked lots of questions and wantedto know every little detail of the school.”Heather said, “I felt like the people were verypleased with our presentation. Everyone hadvery interesting questions.”Craig said he was proud to representAurora at the conference. Jan said, “I was veryproud to represent Aurora. Im always happy totell people who we are and what we are about”.-Nick Jenkinsonagrees to sign before they come to the school.Janet Johnson said, “ I talked about curriculumand the new challenges involved in creatingnew classes every quarter.”Amee discusseslife at Aurorawhile the audience takenotes.
