OPEN HOUSE: AURORAOPENS ITS DOORSTO THE COMMUNITYOn Wednesday February 21,1996, the Alternative School opened its doors to the public for the First Annual Open House. Many students and their families were there, as well ascurious members of the community.Prominent people from Bloomington came too, including County Commissioners,City Council members, members of the School Board, and the superintendent of MonroeCounty Schools, Dr. John Coomer. All visitors were impressed with the progress of theschool. Many of them congratulated the director, teachers, and students on the visibleachievements of this first year. I think the Open House was very successful and helped ourschool to be recognized by the community/ said student Sara Acres. The halls were crowded and the conversation lively that evening. Many were surprised at the small size of the facility and the lack of parking. Another detriment to the location at that time was the sea of mud surrounding the school due to the ongoing constructionof the Youth Shelter.Everyone who attended judged the affair to be complete success. Student teacherCasey Blough said, I was overwhelmed with the support of the community! It gave thestudents and staff at Aurora a chance to prove to Bloomington that this school is indeed apositive, worthwhile addition to the school system and the town itself.Bob Jacobs contemplates theremaining piece of Kim Lanesdelicious chocolate cake. |
