Problems are no problem for rookie social studies teacher“Those who forget the pastare doomed to repeat it”AristotleAt Aurora Alternative HighSchool there is a teacher attemptingto prevent students from repeatingmistakes of the past. Bob Jacobsdoes this by learning from thestudents as well as teaching them. Many student enjoy Bob’s easygoingpersonality and relaxed teachingstyle.“Bob makes learning kindafun,” said Craig Ferree. “When Iwas at South, I got good grades inSocial Studies but I wasn’t gettinganything out of it. Here I’m actuallylearning from my teacher instead ofjust the book.”Many students agree withthis assessment, which comes as apleasant surprise to Bob, since thisyear has been full of upheaval. ‘Thesekids are real troopers. They came andlearned and it shocked me because of allthe distractions. Most kids would havesaid ‘Screw it’ by now — I know Iwould have. But they just take it instride,” said Bob.One nagging problem was thelack of resources. When asked about it,Bob said, “At first it was hard — but inthe end it is easier because the kids get aless biased view of history.” This is onemore negative that Bob has turned topositive.Nick GurleyBob listens intently to ThomasStalling’s comment during SocialStudies class.Bob watches and makes suggestions to Greg Carpenter’sgame of Solitaire on the computer.Group discussion in BobJacob’s Social Studies classkeeps everyong attentive.SPEEDLIMIT |
