ROADCONSTRUCTION:ALTERNATIVESCHOOLCREATED ATLAST!The Alternative School was just anidea by the School Board until thesummer of 1995.At that time, they decided theschool was needed and developed fivegoals the school needed to meet. Theobjectives were to get classes started,to create a sense of community amongthe students, to establish a set of rulesand policies, to prove the school’sworth to the community, and to have asafe and positive learning environmentfor the students. Many MCCSC students wereinterested in attending the AlternativeSchool, but capacity was limited toabout forty students. They wereinterviewed by Director ChuckHolloway and teachers Amee Yoder,Bob Jacobs, Jan Hagemeyer, and JanetJohnson. Classes began on October 2,1995 at the Boy’s and Girl’s Clubdowntown on Lincoln Street. Theschool met there because the renovations to the school building were notcomplete. The first couple of months weredifficult—the school was not in itspermanent home, everyone had toget to know one another, and theschool was being created from theground up. However, everyonesurvived and thrived and the schoolcontinued to gain strength. On December 4, the schoolfinally moved into its building, aformer one and a half story housecompletely remodeled to benefitforty students and half a dozen staffmembers. Although the classroomsand hallways seemed perpetuallycrowded and shoes were caked withmud from the construction going on,students and staff love it here andare proud to be a part of the AuroraAlternative High School.Aaron LewisSPEEDLIMIT8UNDER CONSTRUCTION507 SOUTH ADAMSSTREET, OUR HOMEYSCHOOL, AS IT LOOKEDIN NOVEMBER.SWEEPING HER ROOM,AMEE CLEANS UP AETERMUDDY WINTER DAYS.TEACHERS AND STUDENTSCLEANED THE SCHOOLEACH DAY. |
