A colorful display of sparklers showers down the side of the basic oxygen furnace signaling the beginning of another heat of steel from one of three furnaces at U.S. Steels Gary Steel Works. This spectacular scene results when oxygen blown in at supersonic speeds reacts with chemical elements in the bath quickly melting the scrap and in company with the slag refines the bath into steel. |
