Photographs, 160/210 Inch Plate Mill, USS Gary Works

Description: The delivery side of U.S. Steels Gary Steel Works 160/210-inch plate mill. The mill is shown in the process of rolling a large plate. The steam on top of the plate results from water which is sprayed on to remove scale. The unique feature of this four-high reversing mill is an adjustable arrangement of housings which allow the mill to operate as either a 160-inch or a 210-inch mill. The mill can roll plates 30 to 200 inches wide, weighing up to 60,000 pounds each.
