Description: |
A cross stitch sampler stitched with silk thread on a loosely woven plain wave cloth of natural linen. The lettering and delicate vine beneath the artist's name are stitched over one thread in each direction. The surrounding flower and animal motifs are stitched over 2 threads in each direction. Colors - natural, green, gold, yellow Eliza Osgood chose a popular Christian hymn for her verse: “See the Lord Shepherd, Jesus, stands With all engaging charms, Hark, how he calls the tender lambs, And folds them in his arms.” She made this sampler for her sister Mary Ann Osgood, who hung it on the wall of her log cabin in Barnsboro, New Jersey. Her sampler is beautifully cross stitched in silk thread on a linen background. The cross and dog motif are English influences. Eliza used both cross stitches and eyelet stitches to create her sampler. |
