Ann Spencer Nichols sampler

Description: Cross-stitched sampler. Border done in black, the lettering in gold, olive green, and teal blue. 13-line sampler has alphabet in large letters, then small, then large, and then numbers 1-10. Below that is "Ann Spencer Nichols Sampler, aged eleven years. Love God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, with all thy might, with all thy strength, and thy neighbour as thyself. September 8th 1812. Morristown N[?]V" In the space between the final N&V there is a letter that could be an unfinished or damaged "O"
Many samplers took their verses from the Bible. This verse is taken from Luke 10:27. Ann’s cross stitch sampler features thirteen lines of alphabet in large and small letters and numbers 1 through 10, and a biblical verse from Luke 10:27: “Love God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, with all thy might, with all thy strength and thy neighbor as thyself.” Ann finished the sampler on September 8, in 1812, in Morristown at the age of 11.
