Description: |
The Evansville and Terre Haute Depot was built in 1875. It served as an important connection between Evansville and Terre Haute for many years. In 1901, improvements were made to the depot. A new platform was built, the passenger station floor was raised one foot and the rear driveway was paved. On October 22, 1908, the William H. Taft made a stop at the Princeton Depot to make a brief speech. Five-thousand people came out to hear him. The depot reached its highpoint in the 1940s due to the United States inevitable entry into World War II. Freight service was the first to pick up. Soon after came a rise in passenger business with commuters, people moving to larger cities and people visiting relatives. Passenger service discontinued in 1967. The depot building sat empty for years until it was purchased. John Burris almost single-handedly renovated the depot for fifteen years. In May 2003, it was reopened as the Gibson County Visitors and Tourism Bureau. -Indiana State Historic Architectural and Archaeological Research Database (SHAARD) Yes |
