Description: |
Ernie Pyle birthplace. Ernie was born 3 Aug 1900, and the family lived there for 18 months after. The house was occupied by other tenants until the 1950s. It was originally built by James A Elder in 1851 for the first of his four wives, located 0.8 miles west of IN 71 on County Road 700 S, then south across a small creek. There was an old community centered around IN 71 and 700 S called Toronto. Its decline started when Dana was founded in 1874, and Toronto was pretty much gone around 1910. A local contractor Morris Wickens moved the house to Dana, and restored it over a new basement at its current location in Dana. The completed work was given to the State of Indiana, DNR and the Indiana State Museum in a ceremony on 18 April 1976, and was operated as the Ernie Pyle State Historic Site until late 2009, when it went NFP as the Ernie Pyle WW II Museum. The structures upper floor was living quarters for the curator, the main floor was furnished in 1900 period style by ladies groups in Dana, and the basement held museum displays and utilities. The birthplace was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 2022. - Data from Phillip Hess, Vice President, Friends of Ernie Pyle, May 2023 Yes, relocated c. 1975 |
