Text on photograph reads: Ford Mark I (GT-40) Debut at LeMans. June, 1964-- Fords first try at LeMans met with failure. Three cars were entered. One led for 35 laps early in the race before retiring with transmission failure. The second car retired after five hours with a broken fuel line, and the third retired after 13-1/2 hours with transaxle problems. However, Ford did establish new lap and top speed records for the circuit. Ford Mark I (GT-40)-- First Victory. February 28, 1965-- Fords first big win in world endurance racing came at the Daytona Beach, Fla., 2000 Kilometer race. The Mark I finished first and third, setting an average speed record of 99.9 m.p.h. for the distance. |
